GYLLENSTEN YR 1991 UL http://ijgc.bmj.com/content/1/5/209.abstract AB A PCR-based method has been developed which allows human papillomavirus DNA to be detected in routinely obtained cervical smear specimens. The results showed that 76% of the smears that were collected from women who were carrying HPV-positive lesions by cervical swab analysis were positive by the PCR-based method. The results suggest that it is possible to carry out population-based retrospective studies of archival cervical smears.
