Abstract

Introduction/Background Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is an extremely rare malignancy constituting less than 0.1% of all breast cancers with very few cases reported in literature. It is an aggressive, triple-hormone negative tumor, and its appropriate management is still debated.

Methodology We report eight cases of primary SCC of the breast treated at Salah Azaiez Institute between 2005 and 2022.

Results We report eight cases of primary SCC of the breast treated at Salah Azaiez Institute between 2005 and 2022.

Results The median age of our patients was 58 years old (44–75 years). The Chief complaint was Lump discovery during self-palpation. The median tumor size was 73.5mm (25–120mm). The disease stage was as follow: T4b in four cases, T2 in 3 and T3 for the last case. The surgical treatment was radical in half of the cases. Three patients had positive lymph nodes. Loco regional radiotherapy was performed in 5 cases. Four patients received six cycles of standard breast chemotherapy each. The median follow-up was 21.5months. Five patients presented a loco regional relapse after an average of 8.8 months (2–22 months). Distant relapses were found in 4 cases after an average of 20 months (3–46 months). The site of metastasis was liver and lung in 2 patients, brain in one patient and contralateral axillary node in the other one. Three women are still in remission, three had a progressive disease and the other two died.

Conclusion Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the breast is an aggressive tumor with its treatment protocol being still unclear, owing to its rarity. In deed it is relatively resistant to conventional chemotherapy, and its prognosis is also unpredictable. Hence, more studies are necessary for a better management of this disease.
